Summary of findings

HIGH — 155 threatened species have occurrence records within 50 km, including 18 Critically Endangered, 63 Endangered and 74 Vulnerable. The tier is set by a fixed rule: any Critically Endangered species recorded within the radius → HIGH. Record age does not change the tier — it changes the caveat. Of the eighteen CR records, eight are recent (≤10 years), one historical, eight stale (25+ years) and one undated; the older ones are caveated in §5. Across all 155 species, 69 are recent, 13 historical and 73 stale. Two nectar-feeding bats that pollinate wild agave are recorded in the radius — a direct dependency as well as an impact exposure.

What this means for disclosure: the client's current report does not mention this region in its biodiversity section. §6 drafts the language ESRS E4 and TNFD expect.

Dependency flag. Leptonycteris nivalis and L. curasoae are nectar-feeding bats and documented pollinators of wild agave. For an agave-sourcing business this is not only an impact finding but an ecosystem-service dependency under TNFD's Evaluate step — the crop's wild genetic base depends on them.

Why HIGH — and what to be careful about

The tier comes from a documented rule, not a judgement call, so the rule that fired is printed. So are the caveats: they are generated from the record's age, using fixed wording, so an auditor sees the same grading on every site.

Rule that fired

Critically Endangered species present → HIGH — satisfied eighteen times over, including by recent records of Agave valenciana (2023), Cedrela odorata (2025) and Acer binzayedii (2026). A HIGH is never softened by missing or old data: a stale record earns a stronger caveat, not a lower tier, because an unverified absence is not evidence of absence. The other way round does apply — a LOW or MEDIUM that rests on a source that failed is reported as INDETERMINATE rather than as a clean pass.

Recency caveats (as printed in the report)

  • Campephilus imperialis (CR, as recorded in GBIF occurrence data) has no confirmed observation at this location in over 130 years, with the most recent record dating to 1892. This finding indicates historical rather than confirmed current presence and should be treated as a prompt for site-level ecological verification, not as evidence of an active population.
  • Ambystoma flavipiperatum (EN, as recorded in GBIF occurrence data) has no confirmed observation at this location in over 45 years, with the most recent record dating to 1979. This finding indicates historical rather than confirmed current presence and should be treated as a prompt for site-level ecological verification, not as evidence of an active population.
  • Zea perennis (CR, as recorded in GBIF occurrence data) has occurrence records at this location, but no observation date was retrieved for it within the records sampled for this screen. Its recency could not be established and it is graded as historical by default.
Threat categories on this run are GBIF's annotation and were not re-verified against the IUCN Red List API; a client report does that verification and stamps the date it was checked. Two garden species (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Oxalis corniculata) carry a CR annotation in GBIF that the Red List check would resolve — this is exactly why the verification step exists.
